For the past two weeks, the ESL students at CIE have enjoyed a shorter class schedule and afternoons and weekends full of fun activities!  In addition to our returning students, we welcomed Brazilian students from the Sorocaba language school.

An important goal of our 2-week summer program is for the students to incorporate what they've learned about American culture into a group presentation.  Please click on the presentations below to find out what they observed about the United States.

For my Presentations class final project, I asked students to observe American cultural behavior.  Based on these observations, they needed to formulate opinions about why Americans do what they do.  The next step was to interview at least 3 Americans on a specific cultural topic to see if their opinions matched those of the student.  Here's what they found:
The group "Lucky Stars" gave an excellent presentation on Alternative Energy.  Check it out!
Prezi templates are designed to show relationships within a topic.  For example, I recently used the template below to present the differences between the simple present and the present progressive.  I love the two animals fighting and think it appropriately represents the difficulty students often have when deciding which verb tense to use.
This session we have a PRESENTATIONS class, and today was the first day for group presentations. We're using the online software PREZI for visual aids.  I really like Prezi because the audience can interact more with the presentation.  For example, PowerPoint has a traditional forward and back navigation.  However, with Prezi viewers can zoom in and out and choose where they want to go inside the presentation.  Also, when working in groups, the collaboration/share element is very user-friendly.

Today, the group "SJK" presented some really interesting information on DREAMS.  Take a look!!!

This week in grammar class (CORE: LEVEL 4), we're using adjectives and adverbs.  In order to distinguish between -ed & -ing participials (excited VS exciting), I had students take pictures of themselves representing both participials of the same base word.  Check out the slideshow below to see their pictures and example sentences.  They did a great job!
I'm Delie Bullock, an instructor for Maryville College's ESL program, and I would like to welcome you to the January session (J-Term) 2013.  J-Term is always a little different than normal sessions.  First, we only have morning classes. :) Also, there is usually a planned activity after lunch that introduces our students to American culture.  For example, today we will do the most American activity of all: SHOPPING!  We'll be going to one of the largest malls in the area as well as Best Buy, an electronics superstore.  We do a variety of activities though.  Tomorrow we will go to the most visited national park in the United States, The Great Smoky Mountains, where we will hike and enjoy the natural beauty of East Tennessee.  That is, if the weather cooperates!

Keep following our students' blogs to see what they're doing and learning.  Here's the links to their blogs. Just click on the students' names to go to their blogs.  Enjoy!
